Public Distraction Training Program – $475

Take Your Dog’s Training Beyond the Living Room

A dog that listens at home isn’t always prepared for the real world.

The true test of obedience happens when your dog encounters people, children, bicycles, shopping carts, other dogs, loud noises, and countless everyday distractions.

Our 6-Week Public Distraction Training Program is designed to bridge that gap by taking training into real-world environments where lasting behavior is developed.

Every session is held entirely at public locations throughout the Salem area, allowing your dog to practice obedience and manners where it matters most.

What Makes This Program Different?

Unlike traditional obedience classes held in a controlled environment, every lesson takes place in a different public setting. Your dog learns to remain calm, focused, and responsive while navigating the distractions encountered in everyday life.

Each week introduces new challenges that help your dog build confidence, improve impulse control, and strengthen reliability in increasingly distracting environments.

What You’ll Learn

During this six-week program, you and your dog will work on:

✔ Loose leash walking around distractions

✔ Reliable Sit, Down, Stay, and Come

✔ Maintaining attention despite distractions

✔ Calm greetings without jumping

✔ Passing people and dogs politely

✔ Ignoring food and environmental temptations

✔ Public manners and proper social behavior

✔ Confidence in unfamiliar environments

✔ Improved impulse control

✔ Building a stronger relationship between you and your dog

Training Locations

To help your dog succeed in everyday situations, each lesson is held at a different public location.

Possible training locations include:

  • Riverfront Park
  • Lowe’s
  • Home Depot
  • Salem Center Mall
  • Pet stores
  • Local parks
  • Walking trails
  • Outdoor shopping centers
  • Other pet-friendly public locations throughout the Salem area

Each location provides new sights, sounds, people, and distractions, helping your dog generalize their training rather than only responding in familiar environments.

What’s Included

✔ Six private one-hour training sessions

✔ Weekly training at a different public location

✔ Personalized one-on-one instruction

✔ Progressive real-world distraction training

✔ Public manners and obedience coaching

✔ Loose leash walking instruction

✔ Confidence-building exercises

✔ Weekly homework and practice plans

Is This Program Right for My Dog?

This program is an excellent fit for dogs who:

  • Have completed basic obedience training or understand basic commands
  • Walk reasonably well on a leash
  • Are comfortable around unfamiliar people and dogs
  • Need improved focus in distracting environments
  • Want to become calm, well-mannered companions in public

Is This Program NOT Right for My Dog?

This program is not appropriate for dogs that display:

  • Reactivity toward people or other dogs
  • Aggression
  • Fear-based behaviors
  • Severe anxiety in public environments

These behaviors require a more individualized approach before introducing public distractions.

If your dog exhibits any of these behaviors, we recommend beginning with our Behavior Modification Program, where we address the underlying causes and create a solid behavioral foundation before progressing to public training.

Our Goal

By the end of this program, you and your dog will have the confidence to enjoy everyday activities together—whether it’s shopping at a pet store, walking through Riverfront Park, visiting Lowe’s or Home Depot, enjoying a local trail, or relaxing at a pet-friendly outdoor café.

Because the best-trained dogs aren’t simply obedient at home—they’re confident, reliable companions wherever life takes you.
